Qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 antigens

The COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test is a lateral flow immunoassay method for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigens in the anterior nasal swab of individuals suspected of having COVID-19 infection.

For this purpose, a sample is taken from the anterior nasal region and applied to a test cassette. The test works according to the lateral flow principle and indicates within 15 minutes whether COVID-19 antigens could be detected in the sample. After 30 minutes, the displayed result is invalid.

Test principle

Unlike an antibody test, the antigen rapid test can directly detect the causative agent of COVID-19, the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It detects the proteins of the virus (the antigens). These are found in the anterior nasal swab when the virus replicates there. The antigen rapid test is thus sensitive, similar to the PCR test, especially in the initial phase of the infection. Similar to the PCR test, it can also indicate a viral infection before symptoms appear.
